Spring in Oklahoma City means it is finally time to get back outside, and for most of us that means bringing our pets along for the adventure while keeping pet safety in mind. Whether you are walking the Bert Cooper Trail around Lake Hefner, exploring Scissortail Park, hitting the Oklahoma River Trail, or letting your dog run at a local dog park, a little preparation goes a long way toward keeping your pet safe and your outing enjoyable.
Here are a few simple tips to keep in mind before you head out this spring.
Pet Safety: Keep Your Pet Leashed and Under Control
Most (not all) OKC trails and parks require pets to be on leash at all times, and for good reason. Leashes protect your pet from wildlife encounters, other dogs, and unexpected hazards along the trail. If your dog is reactive or unpredictable around other animals or people, consider a muzzle for busy public spaces. It is a simple, responsible step that keeps everyone comfortable and safe.
Bring Your Own Water
The Bert Cooper Trail at Lake Hefner is a beautiful 9.5 mile paved loop, but shade and water fountains along the route are limited. Always bring fresh water and a portable bowl for your pet. Do not let your dog drink from the lake, puddles, or standing water. These can be contaminated with Leptospira, the bacteria responsible for Leptospirosis, a serious infection spread through wildlife urine that thrives in wet environments.
Stay Current on Tick and Parasite Prevention
Oklahoma spring means active ticks, rising mosquito populations, and increased exposure to intestinal parasites on trails and at parks. The Lone Star tick and American dog tick are both common in our area and capable of transmitting serious disease. After every outing, check your pet thoroughly for ticks. Staying consistent with a monthly prescription preventive protects against ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites all at once. Ask us which product is right for your pet or stock up through our online pharmacy.
Know the Dog Park Rules and Risks
Before your dog park visit, make sure your pet is current on vaccines and parasite prevention as a number one pet safety caution. Avoid letting dogs drink from shared water bowls or puddles on the property and watch for signs of illness in the days following a visit including lethargy, vomiting, coughing, or diarrhea.
Make Sure Your Pet Is Microchipped and ID Tagged as part of your Pet Safety Protocol
Busy parks and trails mean more opportunities for an accidental escape. Before your next adventure make sure your pet’s ID tag is current and their microchip information is up to date.
